New Treo targets youth

New Treo targets youth

Palm announced a new smartphone yesterday aimed squarely at the youth market.

The Treo 500v, available exclusively through Vodafone, is Palm's thinnest Treo to date and certainly looks less like a business tool than its grown up cousins, but you would struggle to say that the looks will appeal to the txting generation.

It's Windows Mobile 6 based 3G smartphone with a QVGA 64k colour screen. Palm has resisted the temptation to include a touchscreen. There's a 2MP camera, 256MB of total on-board memory a microSD slot and Bluetooth 2.0 with EDR.

The Treo 500v supports push email and you can view, but crucially not edit, MS Office documents.

"We are pleased to be one of the first partners to provide an internet ready Vodafone live! smartphone. The Treo 500v is priced to enable a broader audience to experience the internet and email on the go," said John Hartnett, Senior Vice President of Global Markets and Windows Business Unit at California-based Palm Inc. "Today's generation has really embraced the internet as a way of keeping in touch with friends and family, seeking out entertainment and managing their day to day lives. We can offer users the choice to do what they want, how they want, when they want."

The price has yet to be confirmed.
