BBC alleges Carphone Warehouse is misleading iPhone customer
The BBC is alleging that the Carphone Warehouse, one of only two iPhone retailers in the UK, is misleading customers about the insurance package offered.
The BBC's Watchdog programme, a popular consumer affairs champion, used undercover reporters to capture on film Carphone Warehouse staff providing false information about the cost of replacing a lost iPhone, apparently in an attempt to sell more insurance packages.
The programme, to be shown tonight (28/11/07), shows staff telling customers that they would have to take out a completely new 18 month contract, instead of just replacing the handset. They also allegedly criticise O2's insurance policy as being inferior - again untrue.
Carphone Warehouse disputes that the incidents are anything other than isolated.
Of course, the recent ruling in Germany that is forcing O2 to sell SIM-free iPhones shows that the handset cost without a contract should be enough to encourage anyone to ensure their handset, more than doubling the cost when bundled with a contract.
