Nokia opens smartphone software contest

Nokia has created a contest for developers working with its S60 smartphone platform. The prize fund is worth over $20,000, with $10,000 for the winner.

The firm, along with OS makers Symbian, is encouraging developers to use the Open C language to create applications for the S60. Open C brings the familiar standard C function libraries to the S60 platform and makes it easier to develop native applications in addition to porting open source applications to S60 devices from Linux or C.

Entries must include at least one open source software component that is ported to the S60 platform using the Open C libraries or a new application developed in the Open C environment.

Nokia will invite the finalists to the Symbian Smartphone Show on October 15-17, 2007 in London, England, to present their applications to the panel of judges. The public announcement of the winning applications and prizes will take place on October 16.
