Bill Gates dismisses the 'Google phone'

Bill Gates, outgoing founder and supremo of Microsoft, has dismissed the rumoured entry of Google into the smartphone market as being no challenge to his company.

Talking to the New York Times, Gates said that the hype surrounding the Google phone was unfounded, especially as no one had seen sight nor sound of the product.

"How many products, of all the Google products that have been introduced, how many of them are profit-making products?" he was quoted as asking.

"They've introduced about 30 different products; they have one profit-making product. So, you're now making a prediction without ever seeing the software that they're going to have the world's best phone and it's going to be free?"

Microsoft currently has a 10% share of the smartphone software market, but Gates seemed unconvinced that Google could make inroads into that.
