4G smartphone arrives - in Korea
The world's first 4G smartphone has been unveiled in Korea (where else?).
The LG KC1 uses the WiMAX compatible WiBro network (that's high-speed, long range WiFi to you and me) to provide lightning fast data access just about anywhere...as long as you are in range of a suitable transmitter.
The phone spec itself is surprisingly not one to set the world on fire. There is a 2.8 inch touchscreen and a digital TV tuner (Korean DMB only), but the OS is the venerable Windows Mobile 5 and the camera is only a 2 megapixel variety.
Rumours are that LG may release this phone outside of Korea, but will remove some of the functionality, such as the TV tuner. Obviously, a launch anywhere would be dependent on a WiMAX rollout, but these are starting to pick up speed worldwide.
